Diarrhea in Returned Traveller or Immigrant Testing Algorithm

Diarrhea may be infectious or noninfectious and presents with acute (<14 days) or persistent (>14 days) symptoms. In travelers or immigrants with acute diarrhea and suspected enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC), empiric therapy should be started. If ETEC is not suspected, bacterial culture or PCR panel should be performed. The initial workup for chronic diarrhea is a parasite panel by PCR.
