Timely detection of in utero drug exposure is critical for effective detection and management of intoxication, withdrawal syndrome, and long-term needs (social and medical) for exposed neonates. An initial workup for drug exposure in neonates generally involves drug detection testing in either meconium or umbilical cord tissue. If the results are unexpected, confirmatory testing should be performed.
