Acromegaly is a rare chronic endocrine disorder caused by hypersecretion of growth hormone (GH), typically by a pituitary adenoma. The excess GH results in abnormal musculoskeletal growth, most often noted in the face and distal extremities. An initial workup for acromegaly includes insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), growth hormone (GH), and glucose tolerance testing (GTT).
