In North America, ticks are primary vectors of infectious diseases, the most common of which is Lyme disease. Laboratory testing for Lyme disease is not required when tick exposure is plausible and erythema migrans (EM) rash, a distinguishing feature of Borrelia burgdorferi infection, is present. However, two-tiered serologic testing is recommended to support diagnosis in individuals with specific neurologic symptoms or atypical manifestations of Lyme disease.
