The clinical presentation of pulmonary embolism (PE) is often nonspecific and overlaps with other conditions. A prompt and accurate diagnosis leads to early treatment, significantly reducing the high morbidity and mortality associated with the disease. Imaging is the gold standard for accurate diagnosis of PE. However, in selected patients with low or moderate pretest probability of the disease, high-sensitivity D-dimer testing may be performed to rule out PE in order to avoid unnecessary imaging studies.
