Hemochromatosis is an iron overload disorder caused by excess iron being stored in the body. Hereditary hemochromatosis is a genetic disorder resulting in excessive absorption and storage of dietary iron, leading to progressive iron accumulation in tissues and resulting in organ damage. An initial workup for hemochromatosis includes iron and iron binding capacity and ferritin. Genetic testing should be performed if suspicion of hereditary hemochromatosis exists after initial testing.
