Metanephrines and Catecholamines

About This Topic

A pheochromocytoma workup begins with testing a patient's metanephrines levels.

Catecholamines Fractionated, Plasma (0080216) and Catecholamines Fractionated by LC-MS/MS, Urine Free (0080407) are usually unnecessary and should only be performed as a follow-up test if a patient exhibits clinical symptoms of excess catecholamine secretion. Vanillylmandelic Acid (VMA), Urine (0080421) is useful only in diagnosing neuroblastoma and not in diagnosing pheochromocytoma.

Recommendation

Metanephrines, Plasma (Free) (0050184) and Metanephrines, Fractionated by HPLC-MS/MS, Urine (2007996) detect most cases of pheochromocytoma.
