Celiac disease (CD), or gluten sensitive enteropathy, is a nonallergic, immune-mediated sensitivity (in genetically susceptible individuals) to gluten or related proteins. While biopsy is the gold standard for CD diagnosis, the initial laboratory workup includes assessing serum IgA level and then proceeding with the appropriate tissue transglutaminase (tTG) antibody test (IgA or IgG, depending on whether the patient is IgA deficient).
