Hemoglobinopathies are a group of common, inherited disorders of hemoglobin, such as thalassemias and sickle cell disease, that result in the synthesis of structurally abnormal globin subunits. An initial workup for a suspected hemoglobinopathy includes a CBC and peripheral smear, which may be followed by hemoglobin evaluation.
