Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Screening of asymptomatic individuals and early identification of active disease are critical. The preferred testing strategy involves a fourth generation screen with reflex, which follows the CDC-recommended algorithm for the laboratory diagnosis of HIV infection. All adults and adolescents between the ages of 13 and 64 years should be offered one-time screening. High-risk patients should be screened more frequently.
