When performing drug testing, it is important to understand the metabolic pathways of the substances of interest. A variety of substances may have the same metabolites (eg, both heroin and prescription hydrocodone may cause a positive result in a class-based screen). Testing for specific opiates or opioids and metabolites may help clarify which substances were initially present in a sample.
