Thyroid disease frequently arises from autoimmune processes that stimulate overproduction of hormones (hyperthyroidism) or causes gland destruction that subsequently leads to underproduction of hormones (hypothyroidism). Testing for thyroid disease is indicated by either increased or decreased metabolism. The initial workup includes testing for thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) with reflex to free thyroxine (T4).
