About This Topic

Endomysial Antibody (EMA), IgA by IFA (0050736) may be used in immunoglobulin A (IgA) sufficient individuals as a secondary test to aid in the diagnosis of celiac disease. All testing performed to diagnose celiac disease must occur while the patient is consuming a gluten-containing diet. EMA testing can also be used to monitor adherence to a gluten-free diet in patients with confirmed celiac disease.

Recommendation

Initial testing for celiac disease includes an assessment of IgA and tissue transglutaminase (tTG) IgA antibody concentrations. Additional antibody testing, such as Endomysial Antibody, IgA by IFA (0050736), may be indicated depending on initial results.

The preferred reflex test for suspected celiac disease is Celiac Disease Reflexive Cascade, Serum (3016817). Individual antibody tests may also be considered.
